monk calling

In Saigon we were staying on a rooftop room with a small terrace in the tourist district. Just opposite of us there was a beautiful building, a buddhist center, with a nice garden. As far as I can recall they were having about 3 ceremonies a day, even before we managed to get up. The bell was hit before the ceremony in always the same manner. During the ceremony which could last hours, we heard lots of mantras in pulsating rhythm going from slow to rather fast pace and merging with lots of outside noise and music from tourist bars or even a festival from the nearby park.

Saigonissa asuimme kattojen tasalla. Kadun toisella puolella oli kaunis vanha rakennus, jonka ylätasanteella oranssiin pukeutunut munkki kumautteli komeaa kelloa kaksi, kolme kertaa päivässä. Seurasimme parvekkeelta kuinka pieni joukko ihmisiä kerääntyi hyvin meditatiiviselta kuulostavaan rytmikkääseen seremoniaan. Ensimmäisen kerran kello kumahteli klo 04.30. Seuraavan kerran aamupäivällä, ja myöhemmin iltapäivällä kellon kilkatus ja rytmikkäät kuorossa lausutut mantrat sekoittuivat liikenteen hälinään ja kadulta kantautuvan jokapäiväisen elämän ääniin.
